A Reductionist Odyssey: From Organism to Life Force

Science usually begins from a deep desire, a boundless enthusiasm to reach improbable targets. For me, that beginning was doctoral studies at Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, when culturing primary tumor cells and preparing a karyotype to study cytogenetic abnormalities, was a big accomplishment. What nobody tells you at the start of a scientific career is that the deeper you look, the more the questions multiply — and eventually, they stop being merely scientific questions.

Life experiences with all its detours, revelations, and uncertainties made the journey all the more interesting. Making humble beginnings with chromosomes, moving to molecular genetics, systems biology, synthetic biology, policy, entrepreneurship and philosophy. These are not separate bins of human mind but overlapping circles in a Venn diagram drawn by professional and personal experiences.

What follows is not a curriculum vitae dressed in digital clothing. It is an attempt to trace a flow of life, from organisms to molecules, and from molecule to philosophy with a hope to understand some aspects of life life force, the final frontier. It is a journey in progress, as anyone would guess.
